I just wanted to jump in here and say that needing a new inverter/charger
is not always the case. I upgraded to lifepo4 and kept my 20yo outback.
Been running great for 3 years now. Like everyone else says lifepo4 is an
awesome upgrade!

Hi Eric - I’m in NC as well and in the middle of a similar upgrade path as
budget allows. So far I’ve added two 200W panels to the pilothouse roof, a
Victron MPPT controller, a Cerbo GX and a smartshunt. The solar really
extends the life of my AGM battery setup. I too was hoping to drop in some
lithium marine batteries that have their own BMS and call it good, but the
more research I do, the more I realized I really needed a LiFePO4 capable
charger/inverter to go with them. Since thats not in the budget right now,
I’m sticking with the AGM/Solar combo which has been great for the long
summer days. Not sure how well it will keep up this winter.

with 500 watts of solar. No issues with heat. System stays up with two
refrigerators and normal other 12v accessories. Using Victron controllers

I’m planning to replace 6 Lifeline 6 volt agm batteries (660 ah total) with 2 Epoch V1 460 ah 12 volt LiFePo4 connected in parallel for a 920 ah house bank. I plan to use a Victron 50 A DC to DC charger and solar panels (390 W on the cabin top and 400 W portable on the upper deck) to charge the bank.
One concern I have is locating the Epoch batteries in the engine room. The specs on the Epoch 460 ah batteries show a discharge temperature range of -4° F to 131° F and a charge temperature range of -22° F to 131° F. I placed a temperature sensor in the engine near the existing battery bank and saw a maximum temperature of 130.1° F with the engine running for approximately 3 hours. I expect the engine room temperature may go higher if the engine is running for longer. I used a SensorPush device to track the temperature and I believe it’s reasonably accurate.
In any event, the battery swap is a project for this winter or next spring so I have some time to explore alternative locations or a way to reduce the temperature in the engine room.

Proposed install would be 1 epoch eco series 314ah (or 2) charged by Orion xs12/12 -50aDC-DC charger (adjusted to 40amps) from start battery, with Victron bmv712 monitor.
Labor being the biggest expense, the local shop seems quite receptive to letting me do portions of the work I am comfortable doing (mostly the grunt work) while they provide balance. Seems good way forward.
Thanks again, always good to get feedback from others who have been or going to be in the same "boat".

I plan to run the boat this weekend with temp sensors, but believe your figures will be in the ballpark from infrared sensor readings I have done. With the existing batteries under the exhaust system is not ideal, but being under the intakes might leave a blower as a possible option. The right batteries could fit under the L settee, but make the install more difficult. Both options have been successfully done by NT owners replying to this thread so I will dig a little deeper before jumping.
The several comments about careful planning and capable installers is advise I will take seriously. Given that, having boat specific advise is invaluable to me and I thank everyone who responded.

You should keep in mind that those temperature specs are not hard “threshold” numbers. Most chemical and degradation processes increase rapidly with temperature, even well below the specified maximum.
For best performance and lifetime is it usually a good idea to stay well away from the “limits”.

A little update, I ran the boat south from Oriental today with an east wind 8-10kn for 1 hour, air temp was 89*. With a sensor next to the battery and another 2' forward under the engine room Vent (starboard side). The temperature next to the battery went to 110* and held fairly steady. The sensor under the vent went to 99*. I then turned 180 for the return trip. Temps immediately dropped and both sensors stayed within 2 degrees of ambient temps after 15 minutes.
My take on this is the wind coming through the port hull vent was heated by the engine, and turning 180 had the opposite, cooling effect.
I believe a small blower, perhaps even ducted from the intake to and vented through a battery enclosure would be adequate to maintain temps for the lifepo4.

I’m planning to replace 6 Lifeline 6 volt agm batteries (660 ah total) with 2 Epoch V1 460 ah 12 volt LiFePo4 connected in parallel for a 920 ah house bank. I plan to use a Victron 50 A DC to DC charger and solar panels (390 W on the cabin top and 400 W portable on the upper deck) to charge the bank.
One concern I have is locating the Epoch batteries in the engine room. The specs on the Epoch 460 ah batteries show a discharge temperature range of -4° F to 131° F and a charge temperature range of -22° F to 131° F. I placed a temperature sensor in the engine near the existing battery bank and saw a maximum temperature of 130.1° F with the engine running for approximately 3 hours. I expect the engine room temperature may go higher if the engine is running for longer. I used a SensorPush device to track the temperature and I believe it’s reasonably accurate.
In any event, the battery swap is a project for this winter or next spring so I have some time to explore alternative locations or a way to reduce the temperature in the engine room.

Hi Eric - I’m in NC as well and in the middle of a similar upgrade path as budget allows. So far I’ve added two 200W panels to the pilothouse roof, a Victron MPPT controller, a Cerbo GX and a smartshunt. The solar really extends the life of my AGM battery setup. I too was hoping to drop in some lithium marine batteries that have their own BMS and call it good, but the more research I do, the more I realized I really needed a LiFePO4 capable charger/inverter to go with them. Since thats not in the budget right now, I’m sticking with the AGM/Solar combo which has been great for the long summer days. Not sure how well it will keep up this winter.

Thanks for the great responses which reinforce my best path desire and my competent local shop advice.
Proposed install would be 1 epoch eco series 314ah (or 2) charged by Orion xs12/12 -50aDC-DC charger (adjusted to 40amps) from start battery, with Victron bmv712 monitor.
Labor being the biggest expense, the local shop seems quite receptive to letting me do portions of the work I am comfortable doing (mostly the grunt work) while they provide balance. Seems good way forward.
Thanks again, always good to get feedback from others who have been or going to be in the same "boat".
