Hello tuggers,
My 2001 32 has a Cummins 6BT-5.9M engine with a Sherwood M-71 water pump.
I'm looking to buy a spare. Seems to be a lot available with prices all
over the board. Has anyone bought one recently? Where? How much?
Thanks,
Chris Tassone

Check out Sea Board Marine (sbmar.com) for Cummins information and parts. They sell a redesigned water pump for the 6BT family of engines.

I replaced my Sherwood pump with the SMX pump from Seaboard Marine. It is a much better made pump. Another benefit is impeller changes are easier, at least compared to the Sherwood pump that was on my Cummins engine. The Sherwood impeller required a "key" while the SMX pump has a splined impeller that even comes with it's own simple puller. The one for the 6BTA is $825 US, but if ordering one, check to make sure you are ordering the correct replacement.

I contacted Seaboard last fall and they told me their replacement will not
fit my engine. I don't have an aftercooler. Evidently their pump replaces
a later model Sherwood. I would love to use theirs. That's why I'm looking
for a backup. Seaboard sells a M-71 Sherwood but it's twice the cost of one
I found on Marinepumpdirect. I'm just hesitant about buying from a company
I never dealt with before.
Thanks for your input.

I believe the Seaboard Marine replacement pumps are for 1.5” hoses. The hoses on the 210/220hp engines are 1.25”. You need the M71 pump. I would google it; should be in the $400.00 range.

I’m not sure Carmine. It appears it’s new, but before I buy one I’m going to contact them and confirm.

I believe the Seaboard Marine replacement pumps are for 1.5” hoses. The hoses on the 210/220hp engines are 1.25”. You need the M71 pump. I would google it; should be in the $400.00 range.

Good plan Chris. New ones come unpainted. I carry a spare with its gasket. I think these Sherwoods are more reliable than the ones used on the larger engines.

Carmine,
I received my M71 water pump from MarinePumpDirect. It’s a brand new Sherwood. Looks great. Pump was $325, extra impeller was $24, and gasket to mount pump on Cummins was $16.
