Alternator Up-grade

I have a 1999 32-141 with about 1600 hours on it.

I'd like to install a more robust alternator with external regulation.

What do you recommend for this?

I have (2) Interstate 4D deep cycle batteries, plus (4) 6 volt deep cycle batteries (I believe the above set up was original)

Plus I have a starting battery.

I've also added 700 watts of solar power.

The boat has the standard power consumption - Fridge/freezer, lights, bow thruster, power windlass,

electronics (radar, radio, gps, fish finders)

microwave (through an inverter) I also added a hydrolic-electric autopilot.

In the past, with a non-electronic diesel, I upgraded to a Balmar heavy duty alternator and was very pleased. I tried it on my NT37-199 with an electronic Cummins QSB5.9 and the alternator played havoc with Cummins electronics. The engine was built with a Delco Remy alternator, so I bought a heavy duty version of the same alternator and paired it up with a Balmar external regulator. It has worked perfectly. Highly recommended
Best wishes

Non-electronic Cummins, heavy duty version of Delco alternator and external Balmar regulator.  Made a world of difference – did it 7-8 years ago and still going strong.  Arriving at destination, using inverter (generator off) along the way, with full house batteries is great.
