Has anyone figured out a method of cleaning the water and sludge from the fuel tank on NT-32?  Single 200 gallon aluminum tank.

Hi Harry,

I hired a local company, which came highly recommended, to clean my 200gal. tank. After pumping the tank dry they cut an elongated hole in the rear of the tank and proceeded to vacuum it out. There was little debris and very little corrosion. If there had been much of either they would have cut another hole and repeated the process until they had done the whole tank. That wasn’t necessary in my case. They sealed the hole with a gasket and cover.

I’m pretty handy and have done many projects on Sleepless including installing a new windlass, inverter, watermaker, bimini and electronics, but I think this is a job best left to someone who specializes in it. I was very glad that I had it done and felt better about knowing the condition of the tank. With the access opening already there, it would be an easier job in the future.

Hope this helps.

Hi, Carmine, and many, many thanks for your response.  This certainly sounds like a job for someone who specializes in this work.  Cutting in to a fuel tank is not something that I would willingly undertake!  But, I do not have any alternate ideas.

All the best,

Nordic Tug fuel tanks take fuel directly from the bottom of the tank and not through a pick up tube. If, when you go out on a rough day that stirs up the tank, and it does not result in sludge gathering in your Racor filter, then you have nothing to be concerned about. If there is a regular build up of sludge in your Racor, then it may well require some professional assistance.

Best wishes

All good info. You can polish your fuel by bypassing the existing fuel filter and running it through a pump and filter system. Over the course of an hour or so you will completely filter all the fuel in your tank. If you can somehow agitate the contents of the tank while you polish the fuel you can remove almost all the contaminants. I haven’t done it but I have heard it isn’t too difficult. I also imagine this would be straightforward to set up.

For what it is worth...

Had water and crud in the tank a few years ago.  The secondary fuel filter probe gave a "water in fuel" alarm.

With a large amount of fuel returning to the tank, decided to try using the existing Racors to do the filtering.  Added a valve to the bottom of my "primary" primary Racor to easily remove water and crud.  Also replaced the filter element every 10 to 15 hours.  As mentioned, made sure the boat hit waves to keep the tank agitated. Took several months to clear.

BTW, for those have done so, how do you access the back (the forward side) of the fuel tank?

Cheers,

Angelo

For what it is worth... Had water and crud in the tank a few years ago. The secondary fuel filter probe gave a "water in fuel" alarm. With a large amount of fuel returning to the tank, decided to try using the existing Racors to do the filtering. Added a valve to the bottom of my "primary" primary Racor to easily remove water and crud. Also replaced the filter element every 10 to 15 hours. As mentioned, made sure the boat hit waves to keep the tank agitated. Took several months to clear. BTW, for those have done so, how do you access the back (the forward side) of the fuel tank? We removed a fuel polishing system from our boat and didn't reinstall it.
If anyone would like it, we'd be glad to give it away to a new home.
Available to pick up for free in Rhode Island.

All good info. You can polish your fuel by bypassing the existing fuel
filter and running it through a pump and filter system. Over the course of
an hour or so you will completely filter all the fuel in your tank. If you
can somehow agitate the contents of the tank while you polish the fuel you
can remove almost all the contaminants. I haven’t done it but I have heard
it isn’t too difficult. I also imagine this would be straightforward to set
up.

Hi Harry,

I hired a local company, which came highly recommended, to clean my

200gal. tank. After pumping the tank dry they cut an elongated hole in the
rear of the tank and proceeded to vacuum it out. There was little debris
and very little corrosion. If there had been much of either they would have
cut another hole and repeated the process until they had done the whole
tank. That wasn’t necessary in my case. They sealed the hole with a gasket
and cover.

I’m pretty handy and have done many projects on Sleepless including

installing a new windlass, inverter, watermaker, bimini and electronics,
but I think this is a job best left to someone who specializes in it. I was
very glad that I had it done and felt better about knowing the condition of
the tank. With the access opening already there, it would be an easier job
in the future.

Hope this helps.

Has anyone figured out a method of cleaning the water and sludge

from the fuel tank on NT-32?  Single 200 gallon aluminum tank.
