Hello,
Thanks for the comments on my previous emails as I get batter acquainted with HAMLET 32-116.
I’m curious what other 32 owners with original bow pulpits are using for their anchor ⚓️. This boat had a 26# lewmar plow. I switched to a 33# claw style. Sadly the new anchor doesn’t self deploy, needs a kick out of the pulpit, and this new anchor doesn’t hold as well a in the sand of Hampton Roads as I would like.
If you have an original 32’ pulpit and an anchor that holds well in the sand, please share your information. Self deployment gets big bonus points.

Hi Tracy,
There are probably no better anchor performance reviews than those produced by Steve Goodwin.
He looks at multiple factors including self-launching.
Absolutely worth digging in and watching his tests.

When we purchased our NT 32-238 in late 2020, we immediately replaced a CQR and a look-alike anchor with a 22kg ROCNA anchor. It self-deploys and sets very quickly. It never disappointed us on the Loop and beyond.

Snorri came with a 15 kg Seadog (Bruce claw type) anchor. I replaced it with a Viking 15 kg anchor (see Steve Goodwin of SV Panope’s YouTube videos). I also installed a Mantus Anchor Guard:

The anchor guard secures the anchor in the bow roller and prevents the anchor tip from contacting the hull. Excellent anchor - only downside is it’s not self launching.

Carrie Rose had a 22kg Bruce attached to almost 200 feet of 3/8 G40 chain.

100% agree on ROCNA 22. Self deploys every time. Never had an issue in 4

100% agree on ROCNA 22. Self deploys every time. Never had an issue in 4

What anchor works best for you has a lot to do with the sea bed material, exposure and depth where you cruise, hence the reasons for so many preferences, and why this is such a hot topic. I’ve owned several boats and experienced different anchors in various conditions. There is not one right answer. I’m not a fan of any plow type anchors (CQR, Lewmar Delta). I’ve used them with success, but believe there are now better options. The Claw anchors (Bruce and copies) are popular in the rocking bottoms of the PNW. I’m not sure why NT has them as their standard. Places with a lot of kelp or eel grass present their own problems: you need lots of weight to get through it. I do like the new breed of “scoop” type anchors (with and without roll bars) and my preference has been the Rochna. I’ve used one on a variety of boats in various conditions with nothing but great success. For my new to me NT32-251 in 2023, I quickly replaced the Lewmar Claw with a Rochna Mark 2. That said, my second (back-up) anchor is a Fortress FX16 (aluminum Danforth type) with 30’ of 3/8” chain to help get it to the bottom. It’s with its rode are stored away in the bilge.
