Curious if anyone has tried any sort of sealant to stop the sound barrier flaking? I considered replacing it entirely but it seems to be a huge and messy project. Hoping there is a more simple solution out there.
The thin outside covering and the foam barrier are failing from age and
heat exposure. You are correct that entire barrier blanket will be messy,
however, IMO, it is far simpler to tear out the old and replace it than to
attempt a makeshift repair. Look for a sound barrier product that has a a
high density layer and peel off adhesive on one side.
It comes in sheets and you can cut it to fit.

I have done minor fix ups with foil tape, which works great.
