Probably worthwhile to mention types of inverters when selecting for purchase.
There are two: modified and true sinewave. Modified are less expensive but simulate household AC by a squared up version of the waveform. True sine unit output a true sinusoidal waveform like household AC.
Look at how much power is usable power when selecting a unit. In general, with modified sine, motor and microwave, etc you need a higher wattage inverter than one would think by adding loads. Stereos for example also benefit from true sine because of electrical noise in the quality of music.
In general, use true sinewave to be less concerned about type of units being powered.

Thanks for all the details. I have a few questions. Did you supply inverter power to the complete AC System on the vessel and you turn on the breaker you wish to power? Does this newly installed system supply power, or can it, when the shore power is connected. Another words, can both AC shore and inverter power supply service at the same time or do you have to make sure the inverter is off while on shore? Was the inverter you installed a pass through model?

Dear Subscribers:
I just posted a new article in the Maintenance Tips section of the SENTOA website. The article was submitted by Mike Stern (Unwind, 32-254) who installed a 2000 watt Xantrex inverter in lieu of a generator. The article includes bulleted instructions, clearly labeled photos and a wiring diagram.
