NT 37 spare propane

Good evening everyone,

With a long winter ahead and a 20lb horizontal aluminum propane tank that failed its recertification because it has an old style valve, I’m considering my options.

I’m looking into replacing the valve on the tank with a new, modern one. Not such a big deal, I’m hoping. But I am curious about what other NT37 owners do for a spare tank. That 20 pounder is big and will last a long time, but all my previous boats have had a backup propane tank. When we move aboard full time, I’d like to have a backup for when the big tank gets low.

From a previous boat, I’ve got a pair of recently recertification six pound aluminum tanks but don’t know where I can safely store them…they are too tall to stand up in the propane locker and I don’t want to store them on their sides for safety reasons.

What do other NT37 owners do to safely store a backup tank aboard?

We have the 20 lb horizontal tank as well but rectified earlier this year. We also have 2 1lb bottles and an adapter in the propane locker. Then we have a 5lb tank in a case for the BBQ. It also fits in the locker.

We were surprised this summer after being onboard 2 months full time we had only used 1.5 gallons. (Stove only, oven was convection microwave)

I recently had my 20 lb horizontal aluminum tank re-certified and a new valve installed (the old valve was defective and leaking.  The total cost was $56.65 for both the inspection and new valve. I carry a 5 lb propane tank as a backup and it fits in the propane locker.

I had my 20lb Worthington horizontal aluminum tank recertified with a new valve.  I keep two one lb propane tanks and an adapter in the propane locker as a backup.  Two pounds of propane will surely get us to the next propane refill location.
