I am having my cutlass bearing replaced. I would appreciate someone sending me the proper, or only, way to drop the rudder post.

The easiest way is to remove the rudder bearing and seal. Then the rudder can be lifted and tilted to the side to drop it below the shoe.
You may need to move the safety collar on the rudder post if it is really close to the hull. As an option the shoe can be forced down just a bit without permanently deforming it.
I would replace the seal if you remove and reinstall the rudder. The bearing is probably OK.

Take a look at the Maintenance section at: http://nordictugowners.com/
Look for “ Servicing the PYI PSS Dripless Shaft Seal”
There’s a link to a very well documented PDF with photos and step-by-step instructions for removing the rudder, shaft, and cutless bearings.
