Tipis How to Winterize AC on NT42

Good Morning,

Upon closing the seacock to the raw water strainer attached to the AC Pump, I placed a Trac Flushcap Connector to the raw water strainer, then force pumped antifreeze into the strainer, and noted antifreeze successfully exiting the port aft thruhull.

After pumping 2 more gallons of antifreeze through the system, no antifreeze exited from the thruhull ports for the 2nd or 3rd AC unit.

Thinking there may be manifolds for turning water on / off through the system, I could not locate any.

How does one force antifreeze into the second and third AC compressor units?

Thanks

Robert

Robert,

I own 42-073.  Upon inspecting the a/c seawater loop, I believe it
self-drains except for the dip in the line that goes under the master cabin
floor.  Having said this, I installed a ball valve on the discharge lines
for the salon unit (in the lazaret) and pilot house unit (engine room).  By
closing these valves, you can force either antifreeze or compressed air to
clear the master cabin unit of seawater.  I have not had any freezing issues
using this method, but we are located in NC and rarely see sub 20F temps.

Thanks David,

I'm not certain what transpired from last season where I followed the same process as below.
For some reason, I am not getting antifreeze pumping through the second two units.
I'll disassemble the cabinets covering the units to learn more about the seawater loop to the compressors

Update from my original posting. I’ve been talked into simply blowing out the entire system with my compressor. I already have a “flush cap” for the A/C system strainer and have ordered an attachment for that cap to allow me to connect my compressor. Open all three of the thru hull valves and let the compressor rip! Waiting for Amazon to deliver the compressor adaptor and I’ll report back when the job is done. Photos attached for clarification.

Thanks All

I have used the flush cap connector, it's a great addition to my winterization "kit."

Spoke with Chuck Hansen, the prior owner of my NT, and probably the most knowledgeable fellows in the world on maintaining your NT.

Chuck shared that the single line leaving the Salon compressor is attached to a "Y" behind the wall of the former trash compactor port side in the galley. One arm of the "Y" goes to the Pilot House compressor that empties through a starboard side thru hull. The other arm goes to the Stateroom compressor.

Apparently my Jabasco pump wasn't powerful enough to push antifreeze beyond the "Y" so all the fluid exited from both port sided thru hulls, never arriving to the Pilot House compressor.

Same thing occurred when I attached a 6-gallon bucket filled with antifreeze directly to the raw water strainer...then activated the AC pump, the system emptied all 6-gallons before any antifreeze was delivered to the Pilot House compressor.

I am the "winter dock master" at our club, managing 20 ice eaters protecting 18 winter wet stored boats (including my NT). I opined last evening that we'll unlikely need the ice eaters as I've pumped enough antifreeze into the harbor these last three days.

I'll be disassembling the cabinetry this weekend to locate the "Y" to install a manifold valve that will turn off flow to the Stateroom compressor and "force" antifreeze to the Pilot House. I'll let you know how this works.

Thanks for your thoughts and contributions!

Robert

After pumping 2 more gallons of antifreeze through the system, no antifreeze exited from the thruhull ports for the 2nd or 3rd AC unit.

Thinking there may be manifolds for turning water on / off through the system, I could not locate any.

How does one force antifreeze into the second and third AC compressor units?

Thanks

Robert

Thanks All I have used the flush cap connector, it's a great addition to my winterization "kit." Spoke with Chuck Hansen, the prior owner of my NT, and probably the most knowledgeable fellows in the world on maintaining your NT.

I'll be disassembling the cabinetry this weekend to locate the "Y" to install a manifold valve that will turn off flow to the Stateroom compressor and "force" antifreeze to the Pilot House. I'll let you know how this works.

Robert,

I own 42-073.  Upon inspecting the a/c seawater loop, I believe it self-drains except for the dip in the line that goes under the master cabin floor.  Having said this, I installed a ball valve on the discharge lines for the salon unit (in the lazaret) and pilot house unit (engine room).  By closing these valves, you can force either antifreeze or compressed air to clear the master cabin unit of seawater.  I have not had any freezing issues using this method, but we are located in NC and rarely see sub 20F temps.

Thanks

Quick update from Hampton. The hose adaptor arrived yesterday and we went down to the boat this morning with my pancake compressor. Hooked the compressor up to my filter housing (after removal of the strainer), closed the thru hull, opened all three SW thru hull valves, set the compressor to around 25 psi and let her run. Took about a minute for the compressor to evacuate all the water from the system. After shutting down the compressor, I emptied the still full filter bowl and that was it! Very easy. FYI, I then used about 8 gallons of -50 degree antifreeze to run through both the Cummins (6 gal) and Generator SW systems. Was reminded to ensure the water lift muffler was pretty much filled with antifreeze, hence the extra gallon of so of the stuff. One item of note there is that a friend of mine emphasized to me to drain the filter bowls of antifreeze afterwards. Guess the chemicals in that stuff is not good for the filter bowls. Done!! Thanks to everyone for their sage advice.
