We change oil and filter every 100 hours on our Cummins and the oil in the transmission every 250 hours. What seems unreasonable is the cheapest insurance that your engine will continue to run without costly repairs.

Hi, I have a NT32 with a Cummins QSD 4.2. Manual says an oil and filter change every 100 hours or annually. We are on the loop, and that means oil changes every 3-4 weeks. This seems unreasonable, but every source I find says “100 hours”.  Any help would be appreciated.

I never really questioned the 100 hr rule since it lined up pretty well
with our seasonal usage and it was convenient to change the oil as part of
the winter layup.  If you think about it, it also lines up pretty well with
the traditional 3000 or 5000 mile advice on cars (say 100 hrs at 30mph avg
for instance.)  That said, my car has an oil monitor that supposedly is
based on driving pattern, or some such.  Too bad there isn't a similar
function on the new common rail diesels with their ECM's.

I can see where running 6 hrs a day - maybe doing the loop or ICW - you'd
run up on 100 hrs pretty quickly.  Seems like an off-engine oil filtration
system would be welcome.  For those making these long runs, what's your
practice?
