Hi All

Which battery make / capacity would be the preferred choice for the QSB 5.9
(also powering twin stern thrusters)?. The boat originally came with
Lifeline, but was subsequently changed to a Hankook MF70027 in 2018, which
now appears to be struggling. (Can't afford a Lifeline)

Thanks
Steve

We have had pretty good luck with the NAPPA professional branded ones. They are reasonably priced and easy to get. We are on our second set now with this boat.

West Marine house-branded AGM batteries are, IRRC, made by East Penn and a good value, particularly if they are on sale.

There are several factors to consider when selecting batteries for the starter and/or thruster(s). These include case size, battery chemistry, frequency of use, storage climate (e.g. is the boat stored for the winter in a cold climate), ease of access for maintenance, and your level of attention to regular maintenance especially for flooded lead acid batteries (FLA).

Battery brands can be hard to track. Most all “house brand” batteries are actually made by somebody else as was mentioned in another reply. For starter/thruster batteries keep in mind that you are looking for batteries with high CCA/MCA (Cold Cranking Amp/Marine Cranking Amp) ratings. High CCA/MCA provides the relatively short burst of energy needed to run a starter or thruster motor. This is in contrast to the batteries you would want for a house bank which are made to provide a high amp hour rating.

If one is considering AGM batteries, take a look at Odyssey AGM’s. They have very high CCA/MCA ratings. West Marine has them on sale from time to time.

I recently replaced our worn out 8D Lifeline Start battery with 3 Firefly 110Ah batteries. (I replaced our housebank with LFP so had these still good Fireflies on hand.)

They are working very well and have more than enough cranking capacity.  They can also be paralleled with the stern thruster bank if needed. (I took the other 3 leftover Fireflies & have them as an accessory bank for the stern thruster.)

Using Group 31’s is also more convenient than trying to wrestle an 8D in and out.

So, this is just to say that there are other viable options to the standard 8D start battery.
